The Real Weight
Is Carried in Your Head
by Lynn DeVasto, Personal Trainerfat head

What??
Is holding you back?
Is keeping you from your goals?
Is making you feel “less than”?
Is telling you that you are not worth it?

Yes, I am a personal trainer, and in that capacity, I work with women regarding exercise. However, there can be a lot of emotionally heavy stuff going on behind the fact that we
don’t exercise enough, or we eat too many desserts a week (or day!).

This month’s article is for you if you feel that you carry the weight of the world with you or if you feel that what’s on the outside is simply a reflection of what you carry around in your head. Because of my personal experience, I developed an in depth weight loss coaching program, in which we really delve into these questions and help you move past the “What” and “Who” and “Why” and move you forward. This is when you discover your “HOW”.  How you move through your past, even moving through your present, so that you can live the life you know you were meant to.

Some of the emotional stuff that came up when I started losing weight…oh, where to begin?

  • Very few boundaries - I had very few boundaries, and it was easy peasy for people to take advantage of me because I had a lot of trouble saying no. When I did stand up for myself, it would come out as crazy anger, usually because I had held it in for so long. You know, like a year kind of long!
  • Clutter - What I lacked for in boundaries, I made up for in clutter, both emotional and physical. When I was upset, I used to eat, when I stopped overeating, I started shopping. When I stopped shopping, I began to feel my feelings. THAT right there, that was when the hard work began.
  • Ability to sit through painful feelings - It wasn’t about not eating or working out more, even those were huge accomplishments. It was about me being able to sit through the uncomfortable and painful feelings that came up, and just sitting with them. There were times when I thought I may go out of my skin, it felt SO raw. But the more I stuck with it, the better it got. Now, when I feel that feeling, I am almost happy, and definitely proud that I can get to that moment where I am feeling the real feeling, and not covering it with food or stuff.

Nice, right? But not very helpful by itself. So, here are some things that I did to help myself along, and still do.

  • I journal. Not all the time and not as much as I would like, but I do. I find that even rambling entries help me get a little clearer. Something about getting it out of my head and on paper helps a great deal. I recommend pen to paper, not electronic journals.
  • I do regular clean ups. Do I really need that necklace that my son made me from play-doh when he was 3? Yes, as a matter of fact, I do. But do I really need that purse that I bought 5 years ago that I haven’t used in 2 years? Big no! I look at my de-cluttering as a way of giving to others, and I feel good about it instead of deprived.
  • Sometimes I turn off everything that has power, TV, radio, phone, computer…and just allow myself to sit and absorb whatever is going on. Sometimes not always pleasant, but sometimes it is absolutely beautiful…and if I hadn’t given myself that gift of quiet, I might have let it pass me by.
  • I can “what if” myself to the end of time, so I work to stay in today. All I can do is my best right now, and…that just has to be good enough.

Just think about what our lives would be like if we only gave our best at all times. If you would like more information about my LEAP System (Love, Embrace and Accept your Power), feel free to get hold of me at www.supergirlworkout.com
