June M. Bretz, Executive Director
Volunteer Center of Gloucester County
by June Swords Bower
Empowering non-profits. Connecting volunteers. Building communities.
As the executive director, Bretz spearheads the strategic, programmatic, financial and communications efforts for the Volunteer Center of Gloucester County. Bretz says, “Our vision is to see every resident in Gloucester County engaged in volunteer service, and to be a resource for each and every local non-profit. Based on my own volunteer experience, as we grow, I hope to ignite an excitement for community service, helping Gloucester County residents work together to meet local needs. It is an exciting time for the Center, and I am grateful to be here.”
One of the first initiatives on Bretz’s agenda was to lead a communications campaign to get the word out about the services offered by the Volunteer Center. Included in this initiative is a brand new, user-friendly website, http://www.gloucestercountyvolunteers.org/, that is an even greater source of help for volunteers, non-profits and businesses alike.
President of the Volunteer Center Board of Directors Greg Davis noted that Bretz brings to the position “leadership and management experience, and most importantly, a passion for volunteerism. She has a clear understanding of the issues in the non-profit sector and is focused on efficient use of resources to make the most community impact possible."
In an article in the Times by Jessica Driscoll, Bretz explained that because the economy is the way it is, non-profits are receiving less funding but have an increasing number of people to serve. "We need the services of volunteers to fill those gaps," she said.
To this end, Bretz has organized several events to connect with the community.
- Taste of Gloucester County that included 20 restaurants
- Operation Backpack 2011
- Yoga in the Park
- Harvest Social Happy Hour
- 1st Annual Gloucester County ’Spirit of Community’ Celebration
- 2011 Thanksgiving Food Drive
Prior to joining the Volunteer Center, Bretz comes with over 15 years of experience in the areas of strategic planning, board development, marketing, and organizational management. She received her BA in International Business from Temple University and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris. She is currently a MS candidate at Eastern University and will graduate this December. Bretz is also a certified Hatha Yoga teacher, volunteers regularly, and is active in the arts community.
